There are many reasons why someone might need a stair lift. Even though everyone’s needs are different, those needing a stair lift share one common concern—the cost. You might’ve even wondered if Medicare covers the cost of stair lifts. We’ll discuss various financial assistance programs and how DME Elevators & Lifts can help get your independence back.
Are Stair Lifts Covered by Medicare?
Unfortunately, Medicare does not cover the cost of stair lifts. This is because stair lifts are not considered to be durable medical equipment according to Medicare’s standards. However, there is an upside—DME Elevators & Lifts has plenty of other financial options for you to consider.
How to Get Financial Assistance for Stair Lifts
Even though Medicare doesn’t cover the cost of stair lifts, there are several financial assistance options you may qualify for.
Veterans’ Administration
If you are a veteran, you might be eligible for stair lift funding through the Veterans’ Administration (VA). If you are disabled as a result of your military service, then you must complete a home visit and skills evaluation before the VA determines your possible funding.
If your disability is not military-related, you or your spouse may still be able to get funding through the VA. There are also grants like the HISA (Home Improvements and Structural Alterations), SHA (Special Home Adaptation), or the SAH (Specially Adapted Housing) available. Contact your nearest VA to learn more about special “stair glide” funding.
State Programs
Some state-based programs provide stairlift funding assistance—including Illinois and Indiana. Keep in mind that eligibility can fluctuate between programs, and there is typically a long lead time to qualify, sometimes up to a year or two.
Financing Plans
When it comes to funding options, DME Elevators & Lifts offers several helpful choices. DME has both new and used stair lifts available to accommodate your budget, including beneficial temporary solutions like monthly stair lift rentals. You may also qualify for a payment plan which will allow you to spread out your payments over several months. Contact our team to learn more about your needs, or call us toll-free at (866) 545-6935.
Does Medicaid Cover Stair Lifts?
Medicaid will occasionally fund stairlifts, but your eligibility depends on your state of residence. Illinois does not participate in a Medicaid program that covers stair lifts. Wisconsin and Indiana do have options; however, these programs often have a waitlist. Applicants must meet certain income guidelines, and approval is dependent on a review by a case manager.
As a first step in the process, you can look through the qualifications for the Indiana Aged and Disabled Waiver or the Wisconsin IRIS Program to see if you may qualify.
